During Art Basel 2024, Basel Art Summer Camp and Wickelfisch organised a design contest for their iconic Wickelfisch drybag with a deep sea theme. I had a lovely time trying many iterations of designing it. I started trying a complex Escher-style tessellation to a simple ‘Rhinepferd'(ingeniously named by Monica from Basel Art Summer Camp). My Design won ! The Rhinepferd will grace the Rhine summer 2025 I cant wait 🙂
I spotlight the sea horse as the deep sea spirit animal of Basel Stadt. With its gender-non-conforming, confusing appearance, no scales but an exoskeleton, the seahorse baffles, fascinates and challenges our preconceived notions of what it means to be a fish. Quite like Basel, with all its quirks and small size, it gives many a big city a run for their money.
